Extra-Curricular Sporting Events
Our school is part of the Burnley Schools Sports Partnership and also work with Burnley Football Club in the Community to enhance the sporting provision for our children. We are very proud to announce that we won the Gold Award for our sports provision in 2018, this year we are aiming for the Platinum!
School Games run competitions throughout the year that our children take part in. These events include a variety of different sporting activities and are inclusive of all abilities. The children thoroughly enjoy every event and our team spirit is second to none; we have fantastic support from our staff and parents.
After each sporting event, our Sports Leader children write a report. You can view these reports below.
Elite Cross Country
On the 30th April, four of our Year 5 and 6 pupils were chosen to represent St James’ and what an amazing event it was! First, we watched the girls race. The race was a long one and the girls followed the advice given to them at the start and started slow so that they weren’t worn out later on, especially with the heat. Part way through the race we saw the girls running out of the trees and we cheered them all the way to the finish line. We started to go to the race start, (The hares set off, these are the runners that show us the way).
Our St James’ boys then took part in the second race. Here, one of our St James’ pupils explains what happened during the boys’ race:
“They (the girls) were right it was hot and it was a long race, I had to beat my position I got in the last race time. I could see the finish line, I ran, I could here the girls cheering. I crossed the finishing line. I’d done it, all the boys can now run for school again and represent Burnley in the Lancashire race. Thank you for all the support and encouragement that you gave us. ”
Overall, the cross country event went really well and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We cannot wait for the next opportunity to take part in the cross country event and watch our St James’ children flourish.
We can confirm that the Hartley Cup will be held at Turf Moor on Tuesday 14th May, at approximately 5.30pm. All support is appreciated so all are welcome to join us in supporting St James’ Lanehead.
This month saw the Semi Final of the Hartley Cup where our St James’ pupils performed brilliantly and have earned their spot at the Finals next term! The children did us all proud and showed true St James’ spirit which helped bring them to victory. Mrs Burnett was extremely impressed with their
continuous effort and sportsmanship throughout the game.
This month’s sporting events have been very exciting! We have had dodgeball, a gifted and talented competition, tag rugby and the ‘Hartley Cup’ football tournament. The children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the event and showed brilliant sportsmanship. It was even better the week before half term as the sunshine came out a little for them!
This month we have had an Indoor Kwik Cricket event and Special Educational Needs Inclusion event which have been lots of fun! The family support we have received at all sporting events has been really good too; parents, pupils and staff alike have proven that the team spirit of St James’ Lanehead is a strong one!

Burnley Football Tournament
On the 18th October, the boys’ Football team took part in a Burnley U11 football tournament that took place at the Prairie Sports Village. As we arrived at the Prairie we warmed up to get ready for our first game which was Worsthorne and we won 7-0. Moving on to the second game we kicked off against St John’s and sadly we scored an own goal. We knew we could score, so we kept going luckily we got an equalizer to make it 1 all. In the group stage we placed top of the group and we managed to get through to the semi-finals and replayed St Johns and beat them 2-1. After an amazing day, we made it through to the final which will take place at Barnfield (Burnley’s training ground) and we will be playing; Briercliffe, Worsthorne and Christ the King. If we win we’ll go to a Premier League ground and we will travel there on the first team Burnley coach.
CVL Football Competition
On the 10th October we played a CVL football competition. This competition is played within the school cluster this has 6 schools in it. So every school plays each other. We really enjoyed this competition because we played with different pupils that we don’t usually play with. When we played our first match we were still getting used to how some pupils played; we draw that game but we supported each other and never gave up. On the football pitch we showed respect to the referee’s decisions and played fare. We trusted each other. As a football team we would like to thank all our parents and carers for the support they gave us.
