🎵 Music Vision

At St James’ Lanehead, we believe music enables every child to flourish, use their voice with confidence and experience the joy of creativity, performance and worship together.

Music at St James’ Lanehead

Music plays a vital role in the life of our school. We believe that music enables children to flourish, express themselves creatively and develop confidence through performance, collaboration and reflection. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils progressively develop musical knowledge, understanding and skills as they move through the school.

Through the Charanga music scheme, teachers deliver engaging lessons where pupils learn to listen to, perform, compose and evaluate music from a wide range of genres, cultures and historical periods. Key musical vocabulary and concepts are revisited regularly so that pupils know more, remember more and make strong progress from their starting points.

Singing is central to musical life at St James’. Pupils sing regularly in lessons, assemblies and weekly singing worship every Wednesday, where the whole school comes together to share music and praise. Our choir also represents the school at community events including the Let’s Go Sing concerts.

The Let’s Go Sing concerts provide an exciting opportunity for our pupils to perform alongside children from many other schools. Taking part in such a large-scale event helps pupils to experience the joy and power of singing together, building confidence and a sense of pride in representing their school community. These events allow pupils to develop performance skills while experiencing the excitement of singing as part of a much larger choir.

Music is further enriched through instrumental opportunities such as Rocksteady and through opportunities to experience live music and visiting performers. These experiences broaden pupils’ cultural capital and inspire future musical aspirations.

🌱 Christian Vision and Values

Music at St James’ Lanehead reflects our Christian vision by giving pupils opportunities to flourish, use their gifts with confidence and experience the joy of learning and worship together. Through singing and performing, pupils develop perseverance as they practise and improve their skills, confidence as they share their talents with others and a strong sense of community as they work collaboratively in choirs and group performances. Music encourages pupils to celebrate the gifts and talents of others and recognise that everyone has a valuable contribution to make.
