Music

At St James’ Lanehead, Music is taught thematically with skills and projects carefully mapped against the curriculum. The skills and knowledge taught is built up and sequenced through the school. Due to the nature of the vertically grouped classes, a two—year rolling program ensures the complete coverage of skills on a bi-annual cycle.

Our aims for Music is to ensure that by the end of KS2 all pupils:

· will perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

· learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

· understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Our school has an innovative and newly revised music curriculum, which combines musical theory and understanding. This is taught in an exciting and engaging way with a practical basis. In order to ensure quality music provision, the ‘Charanga’ scheme is used across school enabling all staff to teach music confidently. On their journey through Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils experience the basics of percussion, woodwind, tuned percussion and string instruments. Our music curriculum has been adapted to meet the needs of the children. Class teachers and PPA teachers are teaching music in YR, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, within Y3, a music specialist teaches music with the aim of continually improving the standard of teaching within KS2.

We believe that music allows our children to flourish in all they do. We provide a variety of exciting opportunities to develop and enrich children’s experiences. Children’s self-esteem and confidence is increased, as well as their ability to listen and concentrate. All abilities and efforts celebrated within school.

Our pupils also perform at events and have audiences come to the school to see them perform, we take part in local and community music events.

In Year 3, all children are taught to play a tuned instrument. Additionally, school has access to a range of tuned and untuned instruments for use within music lessons and outside of the curriculum. They also have the option to take additional small group or individual tuition (subject to demand and at a subsidised cost).

There are extra curricular activities that run throughout each school year including choirs, ensembles and musical theatre based classes. Singing is a large part of our music curriculum and our pupils perform every year at various events.
