Visit from Santa

We had a surprise visit from Father and Mary Christmas. They read us a story and we had some pictures taken with them. This has made the children extremely excited about Christmas.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Willow class had a very exciting trip to watch the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime at the marvellous Hippodrome Theatre. We travelled by coach from school to the theatre. Everyone was in such high spirits about watching the pantomime. We discussed our previous knowledge of the characters from the story as well as which characters we liked and disliked. The show did not disappoint. All of the actors, production and of course the singing was spectacular, and they really got all of the children and adults involved from start to finish. We did not want to leave after the show had finished and we could not stop discussing the pantomime on the way back to school. Willow class's behavior was impeccable while out in public and they did St James' Lanehead very proud following our 'calm school code'. What an amazing trip Willow class!

Fire Brigade Visit

We were very lucky to have a visit from the ‘Fire Brigade’ who work at the fire station very close to our school. We revised our knowledge on fire safety as well as the dangers that fire may pose to us. We learnt about how to keep ourselves safe and what to do in an event of a fire at school or at home. The firefighters told us about what their daily job entails as well as the challenges they have had to overcome. We got to take part in some role play and dress up as firefighters.

Life Education

We recently had the ‘Life Education’ team come into year 2 to talk to us about ‘healthy bodies’ linked to Science and PSHE. We learnt about all of the important organs in our bodies and how to look after them. We also learnt about why eating the right foods and getting the right amount of sleep was important for our bodies. Children had a go at identifying and labelling the different organs in the body. We had plenty of questions to ask as well as questions to answer. We also learnt about why ‘feelings’ are important, how to include others and what to do if we are feeling ‘sad’ thinking about who we can turn to if we need help.

World Book Day

On March 7th we celebrated World Book Day. Willow Class came into school dressed as one of their favourite characters from a book. Our class book was Paddington Bear. We did a number of activities linked to Paddington Bear such as writing a letter to Aunt Lucy as Paddington to tell her what life was like in London with the Browns. We also looked at where Peru was on a world map, as well as locating where London was. We thought about how long Paddington’s journey might have taken as well as the various methods of transport that Paddington might have used to get from Peru to London. As well as this, we created a healthy meal that Paddington could eat after one of his long adventures. We also designed some new clothes that Paddington could wear on his next adventure! We had such a fantastic day and can’t wait to celebrate World Book Day next year.

International Women's Day

On March 8th we celebrated International Women’s Day. We linked this to the hashtag #letgirlsplay. We feel passionate about equal opportunities for girls to play football within school and therefore celebrated this at St James’ Lanehead. Willow Class took part in some activities linked to football skills. This involved cat and mouse, arm tennis as well as scoop. All of the girls, as well as the boys in class, thoroughly enjoyed this celebration of football and it was good to see everyone in class being active, supporting each other and working as part of a team. It also portrayed to the children within school how important equal opportunities in all of sports are. We look forward to celebrating this again next year!
